People and pets end up in shelters for a variety of reasons, and they will be the first to tell you that there's no place like home. Tough times and natural disasters place high demands on shelters. Help where you can by sewing items they need and help others get on their feet.
Try and remember things that may not seem important. A child may not understand why they can't have their toys or bed, but a small sewn toy they can call their own will help not only the child but also the parents.

With the dawning of spring comes the inevitable kittens and puppies that fill animal shelters, taxing the resources of animal rescue organizations.
A catnip toy only takes tiny scraps of fabric, and a cat won't even mind if a whole mouse isn't the same fabric.

Sew for Shelters
Many domestic violence shelter residents end up there with nothing but the clothes on their back. Fire and flood victims usually end up out of their home grateful to be alive but without any of their belongings. The Red Cross cannot accept these kits due to federal regulations, but many churches and shelters would be thrilled to receive these kits. Use your group's skills to sew up a pile in an afternoon!
It's a sad fact, but homeless shelters run out of room. Hand them blankets so they can hand them out to those they can't shelter for a night.

Sew for Children
Children are the smallest victims in any shelter situation. Clothing is usually needed in a shelter environment. The upheaval from everyday life is disruptive to children and any comfort is a positive thing. An adorable hat will protect them from the sun.Continue to 5 of 7 below.
