How to Sew Mosaic Pinwheels Quilt Blocks

Mosaic Pinwheels Quilt Blocks Link Together to Create a Secondary Design

The Mosaic Pinwheels quilt block pattern produces a dual purpose quilt block. The innermost area of the quilt block is a true pinwheel but with extra patchwork that extends beyond the center of the block.

The extending patchwork forms 'legs' that meet to create a secondary design when the quilt blocks are sewn side by side.

When you choose fabrics for the Mosaic Pinwheel quilt block, be sure that the separate areas of the block vary in color value (contrast). I used red and gold at the center of the block -- two warm colors, and two dark (cool) colors for the rear spokes. The background is a pastel, which helps the darker colors pop forward in the design.

Choose any color combination that suits your needs.

The quilt block is assembled entirely with half-square triangle units. The instructions lead you through assembly using my favorite quick piecing technique. Alter cutting instructions to use a different method.

Choose one of two block sizes. The large quilt block is a nice size to use for medallion quilts and wallhangings.

    Quilt Block Assembly

    1. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of the eight background squares (light blue) and the innermost pinwheel squares (gold). Refer to my quick pieced half square triangle unit method.
    2. Using the quick method linked above, pair four background squares with squares cut for the outermost spokes. Each completed unit should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" for the 8" block or 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" for the 24-inch block.
    3. Repeat, but pair two background squares with two middle spoke (red) squares to make four half square triangle units.
    4. Repeat again, pairing two middle spoke (red) squares with two inner pinwheel (gold) squares to make four units.
    5. Sort your triangle squares, keeping like units together. Arrange the squares into four rows as shown, each row with four squares.
    6. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances in adjoining rows in opposite directions. Be sure to press carefully to avoid stretching the rows out of shape.
    7. Sew the rows together to complete the block. The 8-inch (finished size) block should measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2"; the 24-inch (finished size) block should measure 24-1/2" x 24-1/2".
    8. Make additional blocks as needed for a quilt.

If you plan to make lots of half square triangle units, try the Magic 8 half square triangle assembly method.
