How to Make a Crochet Soap Holder

This free pattern is written to fit a standard bar of soap. You can work more or fewer rows to accommodate different soap brands. Additionally, you can use a crochet soap holder like this to store bunches of little soap slivers. That way, no soap ever goes to waste!

Skill Level

Easy or advanced-beginner. This crochet pattern uses very simple stitches. If you know how to double crochet then you should be able to give this pattern a go. You will do some very simple seaming/joining to close the fabric that you create into a bag shape.

This crochet pattern can be worked using different yarn and crochet hook sizes to change the size of the bag. The materials suggested here are for a standard size bar of soap.

  • Tapestry needle for sewing seams
  • Crochet hook: US size E/3.5mm crochet hook (Note: Adjust hook sizes as necessary to achieve gauge listed below. Use hook sizes that matches your yarn if changing the size of the crochet soap holder.)
  • Yarn: 1 skein Knit Picks Cotlin [70% Tanguis Cotton / 30% Linen; 50 grams; 123 yards; DK weight], Colorway: Nightfall
To make a yarn substitution, look for another plant fiber in a sport or DK weight. Avoid yarns with substantial acrylic content. You want to use cotton or something similar because it will get wet. When you work with wool, acrylic, and other non-plant fibers, they lose their shape and get ruined when wet. You don't want to give someone a great gift of special soap in a handmade holder only to have it get ruined as soon as they use it.

Size: The finished crochet soap holder should measure approximately 4" x 3".

Gauge: 4.5 single crochet = 1"
