Follow these instructions and learn how to make cool mosaic pictures using the colored shells you peel from your Easter eggs. Of course, you can color eggs at any time of the year to make these pictures, you don't have to wait until it is Easter time.
- Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
- Time Required: 60 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.
Materials Needed to Make an Egg Shell Mosaic:
- Colored Egg Shells
- Card Stock
- Pen, Pencil, or Printed Design - (See Information Below)
- Craft Glue
- Tweezers - (Optional)
- Q-Tip or old Paint Brush
You can make your mosaic patterns three different ways. First, you can use a pen or pencil to draw a picture on a piece of card stock. You can also print out a pattern like I did with the example here. You can print out and use a coloring book page or a mosaic pattern. If you prefer, you don't even have to start with a pattern! You can create a pattern as you go using your own imagination and the egg shells as a guide.
Of course, one of the first things you need to do is to save your colored egg shells as you peel them off of your eggs. It is easiest to use a small plastic sandwich to hold each color. Place the egg shells in the bag, but do not seal it. Set the bag aside and let the egg shells dry out.
I let mine sit for about 24 hours.
When you are ready to make your mosaic picture, lay your card stock on the work surface in front of you and gather together all of your other supplies. Use a q-tip or an old paint brush to spread glue on a small area of your design. Apply the egg shells to the glue as desired.
It might be helpful to use a pair of tweezers to pick up and position the egg shell pieces. Continue spreading glue and placing egg shell pieces until your picture is complete.
Once you have your mosaic picture looking the way you like it, set it aside to dry. Depending on the thickness of the glue, it might take up to 24 hours to dry.
