How to Make a Paper Cat-In-The-Hat Hat

  • Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)

Materials Needed

  • Construction Paper (red and white)
  • Poster Board
  • White Glue
  • Cellophane Tape or Stapler

  1. Cut a red piece of construction paper into strips that are approximately 2" x 8 1/2". Cut a 2-inch strip from the poster board that is long enough to fit around your head. Also cut a hat shape out of the poster board.
  2. Glue the red strips onto the hat shape. Try to keep them evenly spaced. Let the glue dry.
  3. Staple or glue the center bottom of the hat onto the center of the poster board strip. Once the hat is attached to the band, staple or tape the ends of the band strip together to snuggly fit around your forehead.

Have fun with your Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat!

Here are Three More Ideas to Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday

  • Read one of Dr. Seuss's books and act it out after you've read it. See what children can recall from the book as they each pick one of the silly characters to represent.
  • Write silly poems after the manner of Dr. Seuss. He uses such fun and silly words, so encourage kids to come up with different words that make up fun and new characters.
  • Watch a Dr. Seuss movie. Many of the books have been turned into movies, simple cartoon shows and a big motion picture of Cat in the Hat. The new Lorax movie is so fun to watch after having read the book, especially around Earth Day to celebrate our Earth!
