Make Quarter-Square Triangle Units for Star Tips

    1. Refer to an easy quick piecing method for half-square triangle units and use the instructions to combine an aqua 2-7/8" square with a purple 2-7/8" square. Sew with scant quarter inch seams.
    2. You should have two half-square triangle units, each with a blue half and a purple half. The units should measure 2-7/8" square.
    3. Repeat the same basic method to combine one of the half-square triangle units with a 2-7/8" background square. Take a look at quarter-square triangle unit instructions for the complete assembly technique.
    4. When you cut the new patchwork apart you should have two mirror image units with blue/purple triangles in one-half and background fabric in the other. Each unit should measure 2-1/2" square. Keep mirror image units together.
    5. Repeat the process to make a total of eight units — four of each mirror image.
    6. Sew two mirror image units together as shown in the lower right of the illustration. Press the seam allowance either direction.

    Sew the Quilt Block

    1. Sew a 2-1/2" square to each end of two star tip units. Press seam allowances towards the squares.
    2. Sew a star tip unit to two opposite sides of the large center square. Press seam allowances towards the large square.
    3. Sew the three rows together, butting seams for a perfect match. Use straight pins to keep fabrics from shifting.
    4. Press. The quilt block should measure 8-1/2" square. If it doesn't try an easy squaring up method to correct the problem.

The sashing illustrated applies to the 16-block quilt layout on page 4.
