    Adult Flapper Girl Hat

    Fun and frolics abound in this 1920s-inspired cloche hat. Based on the popularity of the flapper girl ruffled hat, here is the adult-sized version!


    • 1 hank of Cascade 220 in shade 4002 Jet, or about 130 (150) yards of medium weight yarn of your choice
    • 1 hank of Cascade 220 in shade 8401 Silver Grey, or about 70 (80) yards of medium weight yarn of your choice
    • 1 pair size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles
    • 1 16 inch circular needle size 7 US (4.5 mm)
    • crochet hook, yarn needle, stitch marker and tape measure


    5.5 stitches and 8 rows to 1 inch over ​​blackberry stitch pattern.


    Adult (Large Adult) circumference: 20 (22) inches (Note: the brim makes the hat flare out at the bottom -- if in doubt about which size to use, size down) Instructions given for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses.

    Beginning the Hat

    1. Using straight needles, cast on 114 (122) stitches and knit 1 row. Knit the first and last stitch on every right side row, and purl the first and last stitch on every wrong side row. These are the selvedge stitches and are not included in the pattern; all directions apply to the 112 (120) stitches between the selvedges.
    2. Work in Blackberry Stitch pattern as follows:

      Row 1 (right side): Purl.

      Row 2: *(K1, P1, K1) all in next stitch, P3tog. Repeat from * to end.

      Row 3: Purl.

      Row 4: *P3tog, (K1, P1, K1) all in next stitch. Repeat from * to end.

    3. Continue in pattern until piece measure 5.5 inches, ending with a wrong side row (either Row 2 or 4 of pattern).

    Shape the Crown

    For Adult size, work steps 1 through 10, then skip to step 13.

    For Large Adult size, work all steps.

    1. *Work 4-decrease (see below), purl 23 (25). Repeat from * to end.
    2. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    3. *Work 4-decrease, purl 19 (21). Repeat from * to end.
    4. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    5. *Work 4-decrease, purl 15 (17). Repeat from * to end.
    6. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    7. *Work 4-decrease, purl 11 (13). Repeat from * to end.
    8. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    9. *Work 4-decrease, purl 7 (9). Repeat from * to end.
    10. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    11. *Work 4-decrease, purl -- (5). Repeat from * to end.
    12. Work in Blackberry Stitch.
    13. P2tog across row.

    4-decrease is as follows: slip 2 purlwise, P3tog, pass 2 slipped stitches over. Four stitches have been decreased.

    Cut yarn, draw through stitches left on the needle, and pull tight to close the hat.

    Add Ruffle and Rose

    Finishing the Hat

    Sew the seam down the back of the hat through the selvedge stitches to keep it neat and line up the edges so pattern stays consistent.

    Knitting the Ruffle

    With contrasting color yarn and circular needle, pick up and knit 112 (120) stitches around brim of hat along the cast on edge. Place marker at beginning of round.

    1. Knit 4 rounds.
    2. Increase by knitting in the front and back of all stitches. 224 (240) stitches.
    3. Knit the next round.
    4. Knit in the front and back of all stitches again. 448 (480) stitches.
    5. Knit the next round.
    6. Bind off loosely.

    Knit the Rose

    1. With contrasting color yarn, cast on 16 stitches and purl 1 row.
    2. Kfb across row (32 stitches).
    3. Purl the next row.
    4. Kfb across row (64 stitches).
    5. Purl the next row.
    6. Kfb across row. (128 stitches).
    7. Purl the next row.
    8. Bind off loosely.

    Twist rose piece into a flower shape and stitch the petals together to secure. Attach rose to side of hat. Weave in all ends.
